Number of Times Seen – 2 (11 Aug 2008 and 17 Sep 2017)
Brief Synopsis – After a successful executive discovers that he is dying of cancer and that his wife is carrying their first child, he decides to chronicle his life for his unborn son.
My Take on it – This is a film that never really managed to be a hit yet it discusses topics that many of us have pondered at one time or another over the course of our lives; our own mortality.
The premise presented here works really well and we can easily relate to the main character because his questions are ones that we all have considered.
Michael Keaton does a wonderful job in the lead and we can connect to him really well.
The themes that this film touches upon are very universal and that helps keep things in perspective despite the morbid feeling of some of them.
Bruce Joel Rubin, the writer of Ghost (1990) was able to bring us another moving story about life and death without rehashing his previous gem while still keeping things extremely interesting and moving the whole way through.
Nicole Kidman’s role is quite tame here but since she and Keaton have a nice dynamic together the chemistry between them comes across quite well.
Bottom Line – Moving film that has a great premise and works quite well. Keaton is great as the lead and helps us really sympathize with everything he is going through. The theme touched upon here are quite interesting and leaves you with so much to ponder about the meaning of life and whether things happen for a reason or not. Rubin does a great job creating a really interesting story that is different from his previous script Ghost (1990) yet also quite moving. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Keaton’s character, Bob, tells his wife, “No son of mine is going to be called Zack. He’ll get killed at school.” Keaton starred in “Multiplicity” in 1996 and his on-screen son was called Zack. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
