The Toptober Tens #1 – Sci-Fi/Fantasy War Movies

For this month’s first Toptober Tens, Here are my Top Ten Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy War Movies.

A bit over a month ago, I submitted this list to Zenger and Ellie over at the Zeng This podcast, and in tribute to them, this is my first Toptober Ten of this year.

Keep in mind, that these are all solely my opinion and part of what I would like to do is open conversation and dialogue between us all over the choices in these lists

9. The Fifth Element (1997)

8. World War Z (2013)

  1. A great list idea! Even with my issues with Avatar, I must admit it deserves its high placement for the spectacular sci-fi battle scenes. I might also include Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

  2. Good list. Happy to see Guillermo del Toro here! No YA stuff like HG. That is important. Old-school sci-fi, like Starship Troopers and ID is absolutely cool. Love them all. Maybe Edge of Tomorrow could suit this list too.

But I have 2 concerns. The first one is “World War Z”… it was a great idea, but the result? I thought that as movie progressed it like that giant wall that it crumbling. Have you seen South Corean “Train to Busan”? It approaches the theme in a very similar way, but has no cliches, has amazing effects and tells a very goid story too.

The second concern. All these are great blockbusters, but how about slower, smaller movies that leave more space for observation and contemplation? Moon, Stalker, Ex Machina?

  3. Glad to see the Star Wars franchise at the top and all together. I’m good with that. Good with The Lord of the Rings, too. After that, I’d have T2 higher, and not have Avatar at all. Also pleasantly surprised to see Starship Troopers and World War Z on here. Great call. The one big miss…REALLY big miss is The Matrix. That’s one of my all-time faves. So many ways to go here, some others I love:

The Planet of the Apes franchise (especially the current one)
    The Star Trek franchise
    The Terminator
    Galaxy Quest
    Edge of Tomorrow
    The Last Starfighter
    The Dark Crystal
    Blade/Blade II

Let me Know what you think!!
