Wind River (2017)

“Luck don’t live out here.” – Cory

Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 Oct 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A Wildlife tracker and a novice FBI agent team up to try and solve a mysterious murder on an Indian Reservation in rural Colorado.

My Take on it – This is a really clever murder mystery because it is able to work on numerous levels.

We get to see the way that the thriller works but the layer of psychological issues is apparent the whole way through.

I really enjoyed Jeremy Renner’s performance here because he is able to play the character as a calm, calculated and cool while we also learn many new things about here as the story moves along.

Elisabeth Olsen’s character is quite different because she seems more impulsive in her decisions especially since she is not comfortable in the environment she has been thrown into.

Both of them along with Graham Greene, who plays the local sheriff give us some amazing performances.

They do a great job of slowly revealing the complicated history of the characters as things begin to take form.

They play out the story in a great way that keeps things really interesting and thrilling the whole way through despite its slow pacing.

This film’s plot once again goes to show how difficult it can be to police vast areas with little help and manpower but also how the people in those areas help to make the situations more difficult due to their mistrust of outsiders.

The cinematography is amazing here because it gives us beautiful landscapes of the area even when entirely covered by snow.

Bottom Line – Clever thriller that works on numerous levels.  Renner is great because his character is calculated and calm the whole time despite his unclear past. Really enjoyed the way that they slowly reveal the complicated history of things as the story moves along.  The way that the story itself plays out is done in a really interesting way and despite the film being slow during certain scenes, overall, it is quite compelling.  The landscapes are beautifully shot and gives us so much to look at.  Recommended!

  1. Liked this one a lot. becoming a BIG fan of Taylor Sheridan. But I liked Hell or High Water much better. Renner was very good in this, but his character was a tracker – and low key and more inward – a far less dynamic character (for me) than any of those in HOHW – the 2 brothers of the 2 Texas Rangers.
