Genre Guesstimation – TimeRider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann (1982)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s Genre has been chosen by Kira of Film and TV 101 and it is Western Crossover Movies.

Literally any film from any genre with western elements to it; comedy/drama/musical or even thrillers or horror.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of October by sending them to westerncrosskira@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Kira!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Crossover Western Movies.

“You shot it. What a bunch of dumb sons of bitches, you *shot* it! A *machine* – you  butt-heads!” – Porter

Number of Times Seen – Between 3-5 Times (Cable in the 80’s and 1 Oct 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A Champion dirt-bike racer is accidentally transported back in time to the old west.

My Take on it – I recall seeing this movie a few times on cable as a kid but I had absolutely no recollection as to what it really was all about.

Fred Ward is always a fun actor to watch, but he feels so underused here and isn’t given enough to really accomplish.

The premise is actually quite intriguing but the writers just couldn’t seem to find enough ways to keep this interesting for the short 90 minute runtime.

The film is loaded with time travel no-nos that would cause lots and lots of time related paradoxes and they even found a way to break the main rule of time travel that is a real doosey.

The one fun scene here was when a group of Cowboys try to start a motorbike but I can safely say that the rest of this film is a real waste of time.

Bottom Line – Terrible film with a really poor execution of it all. Ward feels so underused here and the ideas presented here just don’t work on any level. The main premise is actually intriguing but the writers just couldn’t keep it interesting at all. It was fun trying to watch cowboys attempt to start a motorbike but other than that, this film is such a waste of time.  It also breaks too many time travel rules especially the biggest kind of paradox of all.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Lyle Swann goes back in time to November 5th, 1877. The same “time travel arrival date” was used in Back to the Future (November 5th, 1955) and Time After Time (November 5th, 1979). (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not at all. This is a really really bad movie.

Rating – Razzie Worthy
