For this month’s next Toptober Tens, Here are my Top Ten Favorite Sports Films (Non-Baseball).

  1. Rob! Great idea for a list. But no baseball movies? That should narrow it down. I was wrong. Then I had to determine what constitutes a sport? Does it count poker, pool, competitive chess? I decided no – which eliminated The Hustler, The Cincinnati Kid and Searching for Bobby Fischer. After that – and a bit more whittling – I’m going with: 1). RAGING BULL 2). HOOSIERS 3). CHARIOTS OF FIRE 4). BREAKING AWAY 5). NORTH DALLAS FORTY 6). FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS 7). ROCKY 8). SEABISCUIT 9). RUDY 10). JERRY McGuire with an honorable mention to ONE ON ONE.

    • no baseball movies cause i’m a HUGE baseball fan and will do one just for baseball later this month. 🙂 otherwise this list would be 90% [if not more Baseball :)]

CoF just missed my cut. I wasnt a fan of BA (I should rewatch it).

saw NDF recently and really wasnt impressed

Really enjoyed FNL and that was also just out of the top ten range

  2. Like others have commented, Raging Bull is tops for me, but Rocky is certainly a worthy choice. Very pleased to see Warrior make the list, surprised Remember the Titans didn’t. Some others I love:

    Requiem for a Heavyweight
    North Dallas Forty
    Any Given Sunday
    The Fighter
    He Got Game
Searching for Bobby Fischer (if we count chess as a sport)
    The Hustler
    Brian’s Song (original)

    If we’re counting documentaries:
    Hoop Dreams
    When We Were Kings
Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson

    • Great list. Loved Creed as well. But with only 10 slots – gotta go with Rocky. (Creed will have a sequel – and Stallone is going to direct it) I also mentioned Searching For Bobby Fisher, but wasn’t sure that chess qualified as a sport (or Cincinnati Kid for poker or The Hustler for pool). Brian’s Song would’ve made my list – but as a TV movie – wasn’t sure it qualified. Dodgeball?
