Movies From the Hat VI #1 – Vinnie’s Pick – Mystic Pizza (1988)

This is my 3438th Review

Thanks to Vinnie H. of Vinnie’s Movie Blog for this recommendation.

Here are his thoughts on the film.

“What the hell do you think Leona really puts in that pizza? ” – Jojo

Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (Cable in the 80’s and 90’s, 18 Dec 2004 and 5 Oct 2017)

Brief Synopsis – Three young women on different paths in life bond over their fortunes and misfortunes while working together in a New England pizza parlor.

My Take on it – This is such an 80’s film!

That is actually a complement coming from me since I’m a really big fan of films from that decade.

The hair, the clothes, the music and obviously the plotlines always make me reminisce about thoise days.

This film does a wonderful job in all of those categories and I doubt that a film like this would have been made(successfully) in any other decade.

Julai Roberts, Annabeth Gish and Lili Taylor are all great as the three leads and they do a great job of making us care about what happens to them.

The plot of this film works so well because they are able to tell three diverse tales of three similar 80’s women from the same background and keep them fresh, original, unique and stay away from most of the cliches of the day.

The music is great and really resonates with the time and place that this story happens.

Many people see this film as the final stepping stone for Julia Roberts before she became a household name.

Bottom Line – Such an 80’s kinda film that probably never would’ve been made n any other decade. Roberts, Gish and Taylor are all great together as the leads and it’s easy to care about what happens to them all. The plot works well because it manages to tell us three very diverse tales about women coming from similar backgrounds without feeling cliched or even repetitious.  The music is superb and resonates really well.  This film is largely seen as Roberts’ final stepping stone before stardom. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The “Mystic” of the film’s title, is a double entendre, and has two meanings, one evoking mystery, and one that it is a real life town in the American state of Connecticut. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
