Movies From the Hat VI #3 – Debra’s Pick – The Last of Sheila (1973)

This is my 3440th Review

Thanks to Debra of Moon in Gemini for this recommendation.

“Who did this room? Parker Brothers?” – Lee

Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Oct 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A year after his wife’s death, a multi-millionaire invites a group of friends to his yacht to participate in a scavenger hunt as he tries to discovered who caused the accident that took her life.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had never even heard of before and when Debra chose it for her pick, I was excited to see how it would play out.

The premise is extremely clever and the choice to use various personas of key parts of the film industry was a great way to build up the connections between them all.

The cats is great and I loved James Coburn in this because his character really stood out due to the mystery that surrounded him throughout it all.

The murder mystery style of the script was written really well and the various twists and turns that pop up along the way keep things so intriguing the entire time.

The numerous characters constantly have various explanations fr what is really going on and I liked how they all kept slightly contradicting the other ideas presented because it added even more to the mysterious aura of it all.

The dialogue is superbly written and helps keep things so intriguing throughout the entire film.

Bottom Line – Great idea for a film. The use of the various personas that help make a film work is extremely clever to use here. The cast is superbly chosen and Coburn stands out here as the best of he bunch. Loved the murder mystery style of it all and the twists and turns along the way kept getting more and more intriguing. The various explanations by the characters that sometimes contradicted each other helps make this even more mysterious to watch.  Witty dialogue heps keep things very interesting the whole way through. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – From working on this film, actor James Mason famously once said of co-star actress Raquel Welch that she was “the most selfish, ill-mannered, inconsiderate actress that I have ever had the displeasure of working with”. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. Surprised that in your review and comments you failed to mention one of the more fascinating aspects of this film – which is that the screenplay was written by actor Anthony Perkins (of “Psycho” fame) and Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim.
