Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Oct 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A young man on the verge of a nervous breakdown returns to his parents home in order to get a grip on his life.
My Take on it – I have always been a big fan of Casey Affleck and was excited to see what he would do here in his first starring role.
He is able to give us a great look at a man who’s life is on a downward path and doesn’t know how to properly handle it all.
Knowing that 11 years after he made this film, Affleck would be able to wow us all with a more powerful yet similar kind of character proves that he has gotten better as an actor over the years, but he has some great scenes here where we can also see his future self trying to break free.
The premise of this film though is part of the problem because as hard as it tries, it just doesn’t manage to stay interesting the entire way through.
This is not a long film, but there are too many scenes which come across as borderline boring instead of trying to find ways to draw us in deeper, it pushes the viewer away.
The characters are all a bit too quirky and it’s hard to find one who really is a stable anchor for it all in order to keep things more interesting.
Bottom Line – Affleck really shows his talent in this film, but the premise itself just doesn’t manage to stay interesting enough. The characters are all a bit too quirky and it’s hard to find an anchor that will help keep things interesting. This is not a long film, but there are too many scenes that resonate with boredom instead of drawing the viewer in further.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This movie marks Casey Affleck’s first leading role. Director Steve Buscemi said he knew Affleck would be able to carry the movie after watching his performance in “Gerry”. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
