Movies From the Hat VI #19 – Glenn’s Pick – Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

This is my 3456th Review

Thanks to Glenn’s Movie Rumblings for this recommendation.

“Here’s another curse for you – may all your bacon burn.” – Calcifer

Number of Times Seen – 1 (18 Oct 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A young girl is cursed by a spiteful witch that she must live her days as an old woman.  She must find a young wizard who can possibly break the spell.

My Take on it – It’s no secret that I’ve never been a fan of anime or studio Ghibli films.

I have always had a problem with the jarring look of the animation which usually keeps me from fully enjoying the story.

This film actually has a great story that feels so unique and innovative that I couldn’t help but enjoy it.

They are able to mix magic, humor, drama, tragedy and of course otherworldly effects into this fresh idea.

Since I’m also not a fan of watching subtitled foreign films, I chose to watch the dubbed English version which sports an amazing voice cast; Christian Bale, Jean Simmons, Billy Crystal, Lauren Bacall, Emily Mortimer, Josh Hutchinson and Blythe Danner who are do wonderful jobs with the characters.

Especially loved the way Crystal makes a ball of fire so funny.

They are also able to utilize the animation to use effects that help transport us to another place and time and give us the feeling that it is still a familiar type of place.

Bottom Line – Despite not being a big fan of the look of Anime films, I liked the story here because it feels so fresh and unique.  The voice cast in the dubbed version is superb with Bale, Bacall, Simmons, Crystal, Mortimer, Hutchinson and Danner doing wonderful jobs with the characters. The effects used to show this otherworldly place works extremely well to transport us to another time and place quite easily.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Upon seeing Spirited Away (2001), Christian Bale immediately agreed to play any role in this film. He didn’t expect to get the titular role. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
