Number of Times Seen – 1 (22 Oct 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A teenage girl must deal with the fact that her mother has chosen to gender transition which reduces their time together to one day a week.
My Take on it – This is another film that I had never heard of and based solely on the synopsis I read, I wasn’t sure if it would be a film that would speak to me.
In the end, this was such a powerful film that completely caught me off guard.
Loved the way that the story is told in small snippets of the weekly visits between the two main character along with some other side stories that help us understand how complicated their lives have become based on this new change in their routines and outlooks on life.
This also helps us feel the correlation between what is happening to them because we see how it affects them each week slowly and differently.
The themes discussed in this film are done so in an interesting manner which allows us to see how impactful such decisions can be on people and their immediate family members.
They do a great job of keeping this story compelling throughout because we can feel the realism of it all along with the feeling that we have invested a year of our own lives watching these characters develop and evolve.
The actors are mostly non-professional and in this case, it helps the story feel even more realistic.
Bottom Line – This was more powerful than I would have expected. The way that we get just snippets of a year works really well because it helps us correlate what they are all going through. The themes discussed here are quite impactful and they do it in an interesting manner. The story was compelling throughout because it felt so real and the viewer feels as if they too have invested this long year along with the characters. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Filmed over 52 consecutive Tuesdays with the non-professional cast being given their scripts one week at a time. (From IMDB)
