Movies From the Hat VI #37 – Ghezal’s Pick – Sin City (2005)

This is my 3474th Review

Thanks to Ghezal of Ghezal Plus Movies for this recommendation.

Here are her thoughts on the film.

“The Fire, baby. It’ll burn us both. It’ll kill us both. There’s no place in this world for our kind of fire. My warrior woman. My Valkyrie. You’ll always be mine. Always… and never.” – Dwight

Number of Times Seen – 2 (23 Sep 2008 and 27 Oct 2017)

Brief Synopsis – Three short tales of men caught up in the corruption of a city filled with danger who try and find some kind of redemption for their past crimes.

My Take on it – This is a film that I saw years ago and was impressed by the storytelling but moreso by the overall look of it all.

Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez worked together to give this film both the look and feel of a comic book (or graphic novel).

They are able to give us a unique film that takes most of the elemnets of the comic and translates them one for one to the screen.

This film is essential three stories wrapped into one since they all have small interconnects.

Each entity is a great short story on its own and they get the perfect noir feel for us to believe that this is all happening in a city infested with crime.

Each of the three main characters do voice over work on their story that help give an even grander feel of noir.

The violence is quite graphic and the skillful use of various colors helps lessen the effect a bit, but we still really know what is going on there.

The cast is superb and despite the fact that each character has only a small share of the full storyline, they were able to get three top actors to lead each of the stories: Bruce Willis, Mickey Roarke and Clive Owen.

This really works very well as a noir anthology!

Bottom Line – The look and feel of this film is quite unique and Miller and Rodriguez manage to make a film that seems like a comic.  Each of the three stories are done really well because we get the noir feel of this crime infested city, the voice-over narration by each of the main characters along with the violence one can expect from such a city.  Great cast despite all of them having relatively small screen time.  Works as a great noir anthology. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The swords used by Miho (Devon Aoki) in this film are the same ones used by some of the Crazy 88 in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003). That film’s director, Quentin Tarantino, had been keeping them in the back of his garage. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
