This is my 3487th Review
Thanks to Ellie of Zeng This! for this recommendation.
Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (Cable in the 80’s, 15 Jul 2001 and 6 Nov 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A prince must travel through his magical world to save his new bride who has been captured by an intergalactic warlord intent on controlling their world.
My Take on it – This is a film that I loved as a kid and was so happy to revisit when Ellie suggested it.
While I was rewatching it, memories flooded back to me from my childhood.
I recalled watching a special “making of” of this film and as those ideas flooded back, I was able to get totally engrossed in the film once again.
The idea to mix the genres of a medieval fantasy quest pic with sci-fi elements is an amazing one and they do it so well here.
I love all of the characters who made up the entourage of unlikely heroes and it was great how each of them was able to serve a special purpose along the way.. not just as canon fodder.
Despite recalling the story as it moved along, I was still extremely entertained watching it all play out.
The idea of The “Glaive” is an great idea for a weapon because of it’s look and use being able to combine numerous elements from other weapons while still keeping it’s uniqueness.
Based solely on my memories from my childhood, I wanted to rate this film even higher, but in the end of the day, it’s a great film, but just misses the mark of being excellent.
Bottom Line – Such an amazing film! The characters are great and the idea of making a sci-fi/fantasy quest film works so well while combining the different genres. The plot moves along at a great pace and the fact that the characters all serve specific purposes during the quest helps make it so entertaining to watch. The Glaive is such an awesome weapon because it’s also a combination of other types of weapons but is truly a unique idea. Recommended!
