This is my 3490th Review
Thanks to Tony of The Mad Movie Man for this recommendation.
Here are his thoughts on the film.
Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Nov 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A couple’s turbulent marriage is shown over the course of ten years as the spend it living in the French countryside.
My Take on it – This is a film that has a great premise that might have worked better if the two lead actors had better on screen chemistry.
Audrey Hepburn is great here (as always), but she is mismatched with Albert Finney who lacks the ability to make their relationship feel real.
The non-linear storyline is a great way of telling such a story because it shows the parallels and differences of similar instances of life and how they evolve over the years.
That being said, the way it is presented here gets a bit confusing now and again since we aren’t always sure what piece of the timeline is being shown when it jumps.
This film does a great job showing the complexities and difficulties of marriage and how everyone must always work to make things better since no marriage is truly perfect.
This film might have been more effective with a different cast because maybe then it would have been more believable that such a relationship could possibly exist.
The musical score is quite catchy and that is the best thing to take away from seeing this film.
Bottom Line – The idea is a great one, but it just didn’t work so well for be mainly due to the apparent lack of real chemistry between Finney and Hepburn. The non-linear storytelling also makes things a bit confusing because it jumps around too much and you aren’t always sure what time period we are watching. They do a great job showing the ups and downs of married life and prove that no relationship is perfect, but always needs work. This would have been more effective if I was able to believe that the relationship between the two of the them was more genuine.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Audrey Hepburn was afraid of water, so the scene in which Mark throws Joanna into the water had to be done with some divers standing just barely outside the camera range. One take was ruined because the diver jumped in to save Audrey too quickly. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
