Tnx for letting me take part Ladies!
Number of Times Seen – Probably 3 times (Theater in the 90’s, cable and 14 Nov 2017)
Brief Synopsis – The FBI enlists the aid of an imprisoned IRA terrorist to locate an assassin that has been sent to Washington on a high priority mission.
My Take on it – Hollywood is known for taking successful storylines from films and trying to update them.
This is a perfect example as to why that isn’t always such a great idea.
The story this is based on is a mystery-thriller that works because the characters follow the clues and leads in an attempt to stop an upcoming assassination attempt.
This film tries to turn that story into an action thriller with two famous lead actors vying for our approval and fails because there are too many unexplained clues during the cat and mouse scenes that come off as being too convenient for the plot instead of following the breadcrumbs like a great detective would.
Richard Gere and Bruce Willis are both fine here, but neither of them truly stands out like one would hope.
The attempt to make part of the story related to the personal lives of some of the characters feels too ‘tacked-on’ and takes away from the thrilling aspects of the unknown.
The action scenes are fun to watch tho and the few scenes with Jack Black are hilarious.
Bottom Line – Nice action film that is extremely inferior to the original story it is based on. The cat and mouse scenes all seem too convenient instead of following a trail of clues like in the original. Gere and Willis are both ok here, but neither really stands out enough in these roles. The tacked on personal stories don’t help the plot at all and it all seems too cookie cutter. The action scenes are fun, but that’s about all this film has to offer.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – After the filming of this movie, Bruce Willis and Richard Gere reportedly vowed to never work with each other again. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
