The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
This month’s Genre has been chosen by Ashleigh of The Movie Oracle and it is Spoof/Parody Movies.
Please get me your submissions by the 25th of November by sending them to spoofashleigh@movierob.net
Try to think out of the box! Great choice Ashleigh!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Parody/Spoof Movies.…
“Dude, you can’t start a slow clap at any time and expect everyone to join in. ” – Girl at Party
Number of Times Seen – 2 (19 Aug 2002 and 16 Nov 2017)
Brief Synopsis – An unpopular girl is wooed by the prom king when he bets his friends that he can make her popular.
My Take on it – I decided that in order to make my guest choices of the Genre for the Genre Grandeur series more personal (and expand my own personal horizons of these genres), I will take a recommendation from my guest for a film to watch for this Genre Guesstimation series.
This film was Ashleigh’s choice for me to watch.
I saw this film not long after it came out and I can honestly saw that this film wasn’t very memorable.
Having rewatched it, I can still say the same thing about it.
The problem here is that it tries too hard to parody both the high school films of the 80’s along with the teen sex comedies of the 90’s and it turns everything into a completely incoherent film.
The film feels too crammed with ideas that they want to parody and that just takes away from the humor of it all.
Some of the spoofs they get right, some just aren’t funny and some just go way too far when trying to be as raunchy as possible.
This takes away from the balance of it all and made me want the film to just end.
All in all, I would have expected a parody film like this to be hilarious the whole way through and they just can’t keep the level of comedy high through most of this film.
Quite unfortunate! 😦
Bottom Line – Gets some of the spoofs just right, but the story here is a mess because they try too hard to cram too many aspects of the genre into this film all at once. The idea to try and parody 80’s high school films along with 90’s teens ex parodies just doesn’t work because the film looses its balance when things get too raunchy and go too far. I didn’t laugh as often as I would’ve expected from a parody film.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Buildings in the movie are named for makers of the movies that are being parodied. For example, John Hughes High School, “Anthony Michael Dining Hall” (Anthony Michael Hall), and “Harry Dean Stadium” (Harry Dean Stanton). (From IMDB)
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Has some nice parodies, but overall, they are just trying too hard to be funny and most of the jokes just don’t work.
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
