Stripes (1981)

“[trying to teach the platoon to march] C’mon, rhythm! Hut, 2, 3, 4. Black guys help the white guys…” – Russell

Number of Times Seen – Between 3-5 times (Cable in the 80’s,18  Nov 2007 and 23 Nov 2017)

Brief Synopsis – Two friends decide to quit their jobs and join the army, but things are not at all like what they expected.

My Take on it – Bill Murray and Harold Ramis have such amazing chemistry together and this film proves that again and again.

In every scene of them together I couldn’t stop laughing at all of the crazily funny antics that they pull off.

There are so many fun scenes in this film but too often it felt like a cross between Police Academy (1984) and Private Benjamin (1980).

This film has so many memorable scenes but I think the best is probably the parade ground scene.

The biggest problem of this film is the final third which is too silly of an idea and probably should have been completely cut from the film.

They easily could have extended the basic training scenes.

Besides Murray and Ramis this film is loaded with great comic actors; John Candy, Judge Reinhold and John Larroquette are all hilarious here.

Sean Young and PJ Soles have fun roles and Warren Oates is classic as the drill sergeant, Sgt. Hulka.

Bottom Line – Murray and Ramis are hilarious here and we can easily see the amazing chemistry that the two of them had together. Despite being a really fun film it too often feels like a cross between Police Academy (1984) and Private Benjamin (1980).  Has a lot of memorable scenes but the best is probably the parade ground scene. The final third of the movie doesn’t work as well as the parts that precede them and they could have conceivably excised that part and expand the basic training scenes even more. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The U.S. Army was actually very helpful and cooperative during filming, which surprised Ivan Reitman since the script depicts the military as being made up largely of buffoons. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
