Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Dec 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A former airline pilot is hired to smuggle guns and drugs from Central America to the US.
My Take on it – This is based on the story of one of the Americans who ended up working for the CIA which inevitably led to the Iran-Contra debacle.
The story itself is quite fascinating, but the way that they presented it just doesn’t work as well as it could have.
The overlay narration throughout the film helps us get a better understanding of what is truly going on, but eventually it gets to be too dependent on the narration which takes away from letting the story unfold on its own.
Tom Cruise is a fine actor, and he does an ok job with this role. Unfortunately, he isn’t able to bring to this character enough of what he was able to do with some of his previous iconic characters that he has played over the past 30+ years which is quite a shame.
This film centers around one character, Cruise and despite the presence of lots and lots of important supporting characters played by talented actors and actresses, none of them feel as if they are being utilized properly.
Domhnall Gleeson is usually superb in his films but here he feels way too underused for the potential that both he and his character could give to this story.
The tone of the film borders between comic situations that are meant to be ironic and humorous and dramatic ones that have greater meaning and this film doesn’t know what it really wants to be, so some of the scenes just don’t work the way they should.
Bottom Line – The story is interesting, but they didn’t present it very well. Cruise is fine as the lead here, but his performance isn’t up to par with some of his previous endeavors. The overlaying narration made this more comprehensible, but it was done too heavily which ultimately takes away from the experience. The supporting characters don’t have enough meat on them and even Gleeson who is a great actor feels quite underused here.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Despite the presence of cocaine in the film, none of the characters are seen consuming it. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
