Number of Times Seen – at least twice (Cable in the 90’s and 24 Dec 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A New York City police detective must find a way to juggle his personal and professional life when he and his wife must care for three young girls after their father dies.
My Take on it – This is a film that I saw years ago on cable and didn’t remember much of it now besides the premise itself.
The characters are mostly cliched but that’s what made film like this so useful and familiar in the 80’s and 90’s.
Keaton himself is great in the lead because we can truly feel his plight when trying to decide what’s best for himself and his family.
Rene Russo does a wonderful job in a supporting role as his wife who also must change her life when things instantly change for them.
The drug dealer and drug kingpin aspects are quite stereotypical, but they help propel this story into more interesting realms.
The dilemma of this film is presented in a great way and the main character is shown in a heroic and realistic way that we empathize with him as he juggles his options.
Bottom Line – Keaton is great here because we can really feel his struggles when trying to make the right decisions for himself and his family. Russo is a great addition here and has a great supporting role of his wife. The crime aspects of this film are very 80’s when dealing with drug dealers and kingpins yet it still works when taking into account the time frame. Some of the film is quite cliched but overall they present a great dilemma of a heroic and realistic character who must juggle his options and make the right choice. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – One of the bad guys references the Ghostbusters. Coincidentally, Michael Keaton was offered the roles of Peter Venkman and Egon Spengler, which went to Bill Murray and Harold Ramis. Michael Keaton worked with Harold Ramis on Multiplicity (1996). (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
