Number of Times Seen – at least 5 times (Cable in the 80’s and 90’s and 25 Dec 2017)
Brief Synopsis – A young boy trying to hide from bullies finds himself deeply engrossed in a book about a fantasy world
My Take on it – This is a film that I truly adored as a kid even though I probably didn’t understand the message of it all at that time.
The premise is a great one and still resonates more than 3 decades after this film came out.
The special effects are pretty weak and one would expect more especially during the way that those ideas boomed in the late 70’s and 80’s fueled by competition with George Lucas.
The characters are all fun to watch, but the quest seems to be too short, had they expanded the length, it would have been near perfect.
Since the characters aren’t developed well enough, the viewer has so many questions about them and their lives and we truly long to spend more time with them.
It’s too bad they didn’t find a way to expand the runtime.
The music and theme song are spectacular and help keep the mysterious aura of this far away land remain high the whole way through because we want to see what will happen.

Overall tho, the message of this film is great and resonates even more today due to the advancements of technology than it did nearly 35 years ago when it came out.
Bottom Line – Very interesting premise that still resonates after more than 30 years. The special effects need more work despite the fact that the standards of effects were much higher at the point. The characters are fun to watch but very few are really developed well enough and the viewer longs to know more about them. The music and theme song of this film are great and help keep the mysterious aura of this story remain high the whole time. The message of this film is a great one and is even more relavent today than it was when this came our in ’84. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Noah Hathaway was hurt twice during the making of the movie. During his horse riding training he was thrown off a horse which then stepped on him. Then during the shooting of the drowning sequence in the “swamp of sadness” his leg got caught on the elevator and he was pulled under water. He was unconscious by the time he was brought to the surface. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
