Number of Times Seen – Twice (Cable in the 90’s and 28 Dec 2017)
Brief Synopsis – After retiring, a former Air Force pilot takes a trip to visit an old friend and ends up falling in love with his wife.
My Take on it – This is a film that seems to have a great premise yet is ineffective in the way that it presents it all to us.
Kevin Costner’s character should be a stronger kind of character and by making him too weak especially because he is far out of his natural element they take away from the effectiveness that he should have.
The quick romance between Costner and Madeline Stowe happens in a pretty unrealistic fashion and despite their love scenes seeming quite genuine, there is very little real chemistry between them in order to make us believe this is more than a quick fling.
Anthony Quinn is always great in just about everything he does, but in this film, his characters just doesn’t fit him well enough and believing that this man is a vindictive crime boss is a real stretch because it doesn’t seem effective of convincing enough for us to truly accept.
This is all quite a shame because this premise has so much more potential.
Bottom Line – This is a film that doesn’t live up to its potential. The main character should be stronger yet still feels too weak in everything he does. The love scenes seem extremely realistic yet something is still lacking in the real motivation and chemistry between the characters. Quinn seems to have been given a part that he just can’t effectively and convincingly play.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Revenge (1990) is similar to Top Gun (1986), also directed by Tony Scott. At the start of Revenge, Kevin Costner is a Navy pilot assigned to NAS El Centro and pilots an F-14 Tomcat, just like Tom Cruise did in Top Gun. He and his RIO (radar intercept officer) are “flat-hatting” across the desert near the Mexican border. This is not uncommon as there are several large gunnery ranges between the US and Mexico the military uses for training. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
