90 Days of Oscar Nominees #30 – The Citadel (1938)

In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 90 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 5 Dec 2017 and The 90th Annual Oscars on 4 Mar 2018.

Here is my 30th review of the 90 chosen Films…

“Andrew, Do you remember once telling me that a all good research man needed was a notebook, a microscope and a room with a roof over it?” – Christine

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Jan 2018)

Brief Synopsis –  An idealistic young doctor moves to the countryside to begin his journey towards changing the world, but all is not as he thinks.

My Take on it – This is yet another film that I had no clue what I was gonna be watching.

The title threw me off a bit and I had no idea that this would be such an enjoyable film.

They chose a great arc for the main character and we get to see him in numerous different kinds of situations while he sets off to change the world and has his victories and defeats along the way.

The various sections of this film where he is in different “stops” along the way are all interesting because we learn so much about him and his work.

Unfortunately, not much has changed over the past 80 years and the world of medicine, politics and economics still fight over what is best for patient care.

Robert Donat is amazing in this role and I really enjoyed the way his character changed so much over the course of the film.

Rosalind Russell is also great as his wife who supports and encourages him.

This is definitely one of the best films of the year and most definitely deserved its nomination for Best Picture.

Bottom Line – Really well made film that gives us a great arc for a doctor who wants to change the world.  The various stops on his journey are all interesting to watch and unfortunately not much has changed in the 80 years since this came out.  Russell and Donat are both great here and once again prove how great actors they truly were. One of the best films that year and was most definitely deserving of the nomination for Best Picture. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Elizabeth Allan was announced as leading lady, and sued M.G.M. when she was replaced by Rosalind Russell. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy
