“It’s so nice seeing all your faces here: John and Susan and Mary and Fred and Ethel, Little Ricky” – M.L. Pogue
Number of Times Seen – at least twice (Cable in the 90’s and 3 Jan 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A private detective suffering from amnesia must find a way to solve a crime of murder.
My Take on it – This film has a great premise but fails completely when it tries to do something interesting about it.
Dana Carvey has always been a really talented actor/comedian but this film completely wastes his talents in so many ways.
Carvey is mostly known for his imitation and disguise abilities and this film doesn’t utilize either of them at all which is such a waste.
I feel that this film tried to capitalize on the recent success of Groundhog Day (1993) by making a murder/mystery using a similar idea.
I must admit that the misuse of Carvey in this film is the main reason that this poorly written script doesn’t even manage to keep things interesting.
This is such a pity because Carvey is such a funny and talented comedian who helped make Saturday Night Live of the late 80’s/early 90’s such an enjoyable show to watch every week.
This film was panned when it came out and doesn’t get any better in the 24 years since.
Bottom Line – Interesting premise that doesn’t work at all. Carvey is extremely talented but this movie is a waste of his comedic talent. In some ways this is an attempt to be a kind of Groundhog Day (1993) for a murder/mystery but it just isn’t as effective at all. Carvey’s penchant for disguises and imitations is completely unused here and I’m not at all surprised that this film was a complete flop when it came out. Even after 24 years, it’s not any better.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Pogue’s dog, Baby, has an eye-patch over his right eye. It is stated that as a result, the dog has a depth perception problem. While this could be true, the problem manifests itself not as depth perception, but in moving towards things to the left of where they actually are. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy
