“The idea that anything could go wrong with this show made no sense to us. Look at all these talented people.. look at our star…” – Stephen Colbert
Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Jan 2018)
Brief Synopsis – Documentary that chronicles how this show was developed and eventually cancelled because it went too far.
My Take on it – I love these kind of documentaries and was really excited to check this one out.
Anyone looking at the roster of comedians making this show would be shocked to know that it was a miserable failure.
Dana Carvey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Robert Smigel, Louis C.K. are all hilarious comedic writers and they all were predominantly connected to the success or failure of this show.
Apparently while these comedians extremely funny scripts, they were less adept at dealing with their sponsors and the network who wanted more control over the content which wasn’t as family friendly as they had hoped.
Loved the way that via the interviews this film takes us through the whole process of creating a TV sketch show from idea to cancellation.
It’s also quite interesting to see the way that all of the main cast look back at this endeavor and about how much they all understand now what happened back then and can look at it all from the perspective of hindsight.
Bottom Line – This is such a fascinating documentary to watch because we get so much insight into the minds of these really talented comedians who seemed to be doing everything right when it came to comedy but everything wrong when playing the politics of the network game. The fact that this show had the minds of Carvey, Carell, Colbert, Smigel and Louis C.K. yet still failed to be a hit is so mind boggling. This documentary describes what truly happened and gives us great perspective from these funny men on the events of a bt over twenty years ago. Highly Recommended!
