90 Days of Oscar Nominees #35 – Test Pilot (1938)

In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 90 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 5 Dec 2017 and The 90th Annual Oscars on 4 Mar 2018.

Here is my 35th review of the 90 chosen Films…

“You’re a funny looking gazabo” – Ann

Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Jan 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A test pilot living on the edge meets a small town girl and on a whim decides to court her.

My Take on it – This film has a great premise and despite not knowing how it was perceived when it came out 80 years ago, the foreknowledge of what would become of test pilots and their important work just a few years later helps make this film even more impactful and poignant.

The cast is chosen quite well and Clark Gable, Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy all have great chemistry together in every scene.

They do a wonderful job of showing the arrogance of men who risk their lives every day and know that they are living on the very edge because any day could be their last.

They portray those dangers quite well and the viewer can easily see the kind of dangers they face day in and day out.

This is actually quite an enjoyable film but I’m still not sold on the fact that this can truly be listed among the very best of 1938 or any year for that matter.

Bottom Line – Great idea that is even more poignant knowing what will become of test pilots and their work just a few years after this film was made. Gable, Loy and Tracy are all great here and we get a real sense of the danger these men face day in, day out and the arrogant way that they look at the world since they know that they live on the edge. Nicely made movie but not one that I would think really deserved to be included as one of the Best of that year or any year for that matter. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – After Jim flies away from Ann, he passes over the ballpark where they recently attended a baseball game. Although the movie takes place in Kansas, the ballpark shown in the fly over is Wrigley Field, south of downtown Chicago. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
