90 Days of Oscar Nominees #39 – The Love Parade (1929)

In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 90 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 5 Dec 2017 and The 90th Annual Oscars on 4 Mar 2018.

Here is my 39th review of the 90 chosen Films…

“It never seems to occur to you Gentlemen that there might possibly be some men who would enjoy being my husband, even if I were not a Queen. My face isn’t actually painful to look at. My complexion’s quite good. And in case your too serious-minded to notice such things, let me inform you my legs are perfect!” – Queen Louise

Number of Times Seen – 1 (9 Jan 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A military diplomat is returned to his country of origin after numerous scandals only to have his Queen fall in love with him.

My Take on it – As I watch more and more of the early films that were nominated for Best Picture, I am constantly baffled that certain films somehow were able to get such accolades since they aren’t even close to being that good.

This film definitely fits into that category and I seem to see a pattern with films starring Maurice Chevalier.

The story itself was quite silly and felt like a farce.

Chevalier himself was unbearable again and his singing and speaking voice was quite annoying to listen to once again.

I can’t believe that this film actually got 6 Oscar Nominations that year.

Thankfully, the voters of the Academy were smart enough not to award this film any of those awards.

Bottom Line – Another unbearable Chevalier film. The story itself was too much of a farce.  The characters aren’t developed well enough at all and you just want it to end as soon as it starts. Yet another film that baffles me as to how it was chosen to get a Best Picture nomination that year let alone 5 other nominations. Thankfully, they were smart enough not to award this film any of them.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Considered by many to be the first musical film in which the songs were integrated with the story. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy
