Angels in the Outfield (1951)

“The English language has a total of 698,000 words. We ask you to avoid a hundredth of one percent of these… which at the moment seems to be your entire vocabulary.” – Angel

Number of Times Seen – 1 (16 Jan 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A baseball manager who’s team is in last place hears voices from an angel who wants to try and help them achieve a winning season.

My Take on it – This is a film that I decided to watch after recently rewatching the remake from the 90’s.

I found the idea and premise to work quite well and stay interesting the entire time.

The plot itself works better in the remake because of the more advanced effects and the fact that it is more focused on the kids and they help the manager as opposed to a reporter helping him. Also, the cast in the remake is much better.

This film is quite predictable yet still stays enjoyable to watch as we see how things play out.

Really liked the effects used here for the angels because of their simplicity and found the way that they distorted the sound during rants and raves to help get the message across of what they were trying to say.

Since this is a baseball movie (which I’m a big fan of), I really liked the way that the sport itself is one of the main characters here and this film helps show how timeless that sport can truly be.

Bottom Line – Very interesting idea that works quite well.  Loved the way that they distort the sound whenever there was rants and raves. The film is quite predictable, but the message is still enjoyable and fun to watch play out. The remake in the 90’s works slightly better but that has a  lot more to do with the cast and the effects. The use of the sport of baseball as one of the main characters works really well here and fans of the sport (myself included) will find it really interesting to watch how they integrate it expertly into the storytline itself. Recommended!
