90 Days of Oscar Nominees #51 – Libeled Lady (1936)

In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 90 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 5 Dec 2017 and The 90th Annual Oscars on 4 Mar 2018.

Here is my 51st review of the 90 chosen Films…

“She may be his wife, but she’s engaged to me!” – Warren

Number of Times Seen – 1 (22 Jan 2018)

Brief Synopsis – In order to save his newspaper from a libel suit by an heiress, an editor convinces his best friend to pose as a married man and get the heiress to fall for him thus forcing her to drop the suit.

My Take on it – This is yet another film that makes me wonder how it possibly could get an Oscar Nomination for Best Picture.

The plot is absurdly silly and there are no redeeming qualities about the story or the dialogue because as a screwball comedy, they just expect us to “go with the flow of it.

Fortunately, the one thing that this film actually does have going for it is its cast with are led by four all-star actors.

Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy are all fun to watch here even though they are all following a very strange and silly storyline.

Thankfully, the voters also didn’t think much of this film at the time because they only gave it one sole nomination (Best Picture), which is also pretty strange even at the time when each studio would “stuff” the ballots.

Bottom Line – Definitely a screwball comedy because the plot is so ridiculous that one would wonder how a writer would even think such a plot could work. The four stars of this film are the main reason to watch it; Harlow, Powell, Loy and Tracy who are all fun to watch despite knowing how silly the premise is. Yet another film that baffles me as to how it got a Best Picture nomination which ironically was its sole nomination.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Along with Grand Hotel (1932), this is one of the few pictures to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture without receiving any other nominations. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
