The King and I (1956)

“Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera! ” – King

Number of Times Seen – at least twice (cable in the 90’s and 22 Jan 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A British widow is hired to teach the children of the King of Siam, where the two of them clash on how and what should be taught.

My Take on it – This is another film that was always a favorite of my mother’s, so as a kid, I saw bots and pieces of this quite often ad heard the soundtrack played over and over in the car.

They do a great job with the story and keep the music flowing throughout.

The lead choices of Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr were great ones because depsite their character’s differences, they still come across as being equals in just about ever scene they appear in together.

Their scenes that they perform in together whether they be the musical or dramatic ones come across as if they have great chemistry together even when they are arguing (most of the time).

The dialogue is great and it constantly gives off the effect that the characters can be both domineering and humorous at the same time.

This film was nominated for 9 Oscar that year and manages to win 5 of them [Best Actor (Brynner), Best Sound, Best Costumes (color), Best Musical Score and Best Art Direction-Set Direction (color)].

It lost Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Kerr) and Best Cinematography (color).

Bottom Line – Nice musical that has some great tunes. Kerr and Brynner are both great together both in the musical scenes and in the dramatic one because they seem like equals the whole time. The dialogue is great because it gives off the effect of being both dominating and humorous at the same time.  Won 5 of it’s 9 Oscar nominations including Actor (Brynner), Sound, Costumes, Musical score and Art Direction. It lost Picture, Director, Actress (Kerr) and Cinematography. Highly Recommended!
