Starship Troopers (1997)

“Come on you apes! You want to live forever? ” – Jean Rasczak

Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (Cable in the 90’s, 22 Apr 2001 and 25 Jan 2018)

Brief Synopsis – In the future, when a fascist Earth is at war with a species of bugs, high school students must decide what they want to do when they graduate in order to help the government and gain citizenship.

My Take on it – I have loved this film ever since I saw it over twenty years ago when it came out.

They do an amazing job giving us a compelling alien war film which pits humans against an alien species.

The way that they show us a futuristic fascist society also works really well in order for us to get a better understanding of the way of life in the story.

The propaganda films splattered throughout the movie are so much fun to watch because they help us get into the minds of the characters in order to get an even better understanding of the kind of time and place they live in.

The special effects of this film are amazing to watch and the ground and air battles look quite realistic.

Loved the fact that this film doesn’t grant ‘immunity’ to any of the characters which allows them to injure or even kill anyone.

Not only does this raise the level of realism, but it also helps keep things even more thrilling and gripping since we never know what will happen along the way.

A few months ago, I presented a top ten list of my favorite Sci-Fi War films for Zenger and Ellie over at the Zeng This podcast and ranked this film #6, after rewatching this, it has now climbed one rung higher because this truly is one of the best sci-fi War films ever made!

Bottom Line – Excellent film that does a wonderful job showing both a fascist future and gives us a compelling and action packed war with aliens. The propaganda commercials splattered throughout are quite enjoyable to watch because they help us understand the mindset of the story. The special effects are superb and the fact that none of the characters have a kind of ‘immunity’ helps keep things even more thrilling and gripping because you never know what will happen.  This is definitely one of the best Sci-Fi War films ever made. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – More ammunition was used in this film than in any previous movie. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy
