90 Days of Oscar Nominees #59 – Of Mice and Men (1939)

In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 90 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 5 Dec 2017 and The 90th Annual Oscars on 4 Mar 2018.

Here is my 59th review of the 90 chosen Films…

Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 Feb 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Two farm workers travel from town to town during the Depression looking for work in order to eventually fulfill their dream of buying their own ranch.

My Take on it – This is a film that is based on a John Steinbeck novel that I recall reading as a teenager in high school.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of reading for school, so it wasn’t the easiest book for me to get through.

Thankfully, I still remembered the general story and was looking forward to seeing this film.

They do a great job showing us the way of life of men who lived like this during the Depression.

I loved the way they showed the strong bond of friendship between George and Lennie that we can believe that they would both do just about anything for one another if and when needed.

The character of Lennie is probably the most perfect example of a ‘gentle giant’ who due to his simple-mindedness sometimes needs guidance when trying to get a better understanding of what is happening.

This film was nominated for 4 Oscars – Picture, Music Scoring, Original Score and Sound Recording, yet didn’t manage to win any of them.

Bottom Line – Great story that does a wonderful job showing us what kind of life these kind of men had during the Depression. The friendship between George and Lennie is presented really well and we know that they ultimately will do anything to help the other is needed.  Lennie is the perfect example of a gentle giant who since he is simple-minded sometimes needs guidance in order to understand what he is doing. Nominated for 4 Oscars, but didn’t manage to win any of them. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The movie was produced by Hal Roach, producer of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy and “Our Gang” comedies. During one of Roach’s last interviews, television talk-show host Tom Snyder complimented him on the film. Roach responded, “It could’ve used more laughs.” (From IMDB)
