90 Days of Oscar Nominees #60 – Little Women (1933)

In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 90 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 5 Dec 2017 and The 90th Annual Oscars on 4 Mar 2018.

Here is my 60th review of the 90 chosen Films…

[about her short haircut] “Well it’s boyish, becoming and easy to maintain.” – Jo

Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 Feb 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Coming of age story of four sisters being brought up solely by the mother during the Civil War while their father is serving as a chaplain on the front.

My Take on it – This is another adaptation of a classic American novel that works onscreen.

They do a wonderful job depicting the life of women on the homefront during the Civil War.

I liked the way that all four sisters are very different from one another because it helped to give us an even broader view of life during those difficult times 150 years ago.

The cast of this film are all interesting to watch, but Katherine Hepburn stands out among them all in the part of Jo.

This film was nominated for only three Oscars that year yet managed to only garner a win for Best Adapted Screenplay.

It lost both Best Picture and Best Director to Cavalcade (1933).

This was one of the three years where they also announced second and third place for Best Picture.  This film was chosen at position #3 behind Cavalcade (1933) and A Farewell to Arms (1932).

Bottom Line – Nice story that does a wonderful job depicting life on the homefront during the Civil War.  The four sisters are quite different from one another and give us an even better understanding of the kinds of women who grew up during that time. The cast is great with Hepburn obviously standing out among them all.  Nominated for only three Oscars that year including Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay (which it won).  It was able to get 3rd place in one of the few years where they actually announced the two runner up films.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Katharine Hepburn asked costume designer Walter Plunkett to copy a dress her maternal grandmother wore in a tintype photograph. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
