From the Hip (1987)

[addressing two lawyers in court] “What are you two, a comedy team? ” – Judge

Number of Times Seen – at least 5 times (Cable in the 80’s and 90’s and 2 Feb 2018)

Brief Synopsis – An ambitious young lawyer trying to get ahead in his firm manages to get himself a court case that brings him headlines and a possible promotion.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing not long after it came out and loving it because it was such an enjoyable film about a lawyer and his ways of keeping the courtroom aspect surprising and fun.

Eventhough, I haven’t seen this film is over two decades, there were certain scenes that always stood out in my mind and whenever I thought of this film, I couldn’t help but laugh at some of those scenes which proves how memorable a film can be even for giving us just a few great scenes.

Now that I know that this was written by David E. Kelley (see trivia below), it all makes even more sense.

Kelley was the man responsible for some of the best TV shows about lawyers and his wit and knowledge of the law always made for very interesting and entertaining episodes.

This film fits perfectly in with the kind of flair that he always used over the years.

The mix of comedy, drama and legalize is perfectly balanced here.

Judd Nelson is great in this film and is able to “pull off” all of the legal antics with such believability and with flash.

The supporting cast is also great here and so many of them are well known actors who help keep things fun.

Ray Walston was hilarious as the judge of the first case.

The script and dialogue are both superbly written and help keep things interesting the entire time.

Bottom Line – Hilarious film that (in retrospect) is so David E. Kelley.  Nelson is great in the lead and manages to pull off all of the legal antics here with flash. The supporting cast is also great keeping things fun. The script and dialogue is superbly written and keeps things interesting the entire time. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Television Producer Steven Bochco hired Writer David E. Kelley to write for his series L.A. Law (1986), after reading this script. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
