90 Days of Oscar Nominees #64 – The Racket (1928)

In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 90 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 5 Dec 2017 and The 90th Annual Oscars on 4 Mar 2018.

Here is my 64th review of the 90 chosen Films…

“I warned you Scarsi rats to keep out of here! ” – Spike

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Feb 2018)

Brief Synopsis – During the days of Prohibition, an honest cop tries to bring down the corrupt members of government who are on the side of a local gangster.

My Take on it – This is the oldest film that I needed to watch for this series and was one of the Best Picture nominees in the inaugural year of the Oscars.

The premise for this film is actually quite and interesting one but even at a short running time of 83 minutes, it still feels drawn out too much.

I’ve never been the biggest fan of silent films and as an action-thriller, it just doesn’t work as well as it might have had it had sound.

The camera techniques used here also aren’t so great and they take away from the way one sees a story like this.

This premise is actually a real thought provoking one and it’s unfortunate that the story comes across as being just average.

I think that if someone were to try and take this idea and remake it now, it would have so much more potential of being even more interesting.

Of the three films nominated that year, this would be ranked #2 as far as I’m concerned.

Bottom Line – Interesting idea for a film that despite only being 83 minutes long feels a bit too drawn out.  The lack of camera techniques at the time takes away from the seriousness of such a thought provoking premise.  This is also the kind of story that doesn’t work as well as a silent film.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – One of only three films to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Production. After the first year of the Academy Awards, the Best Production and Best Unique and Artistic Picture categories would be consolidated into the single prestigious Best Picture category. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
