“I’m gonna break through or somebody gonna break through to me. ” – Precious
Number of Times Seen – 2 (31 Dec 2009 and 11 Feb 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A pregnant teenager failing in school is sent to a special school in order to change the direction of her life.
My Take on it – This is a film that after watching it the first time after it came out, I assumed that I would never see it ever again.
This is not because it is a bad movie… far from it.
It’;s just that this film is able to make the audience feel very uncomfortable due its frank look at the subject matter and how it openly deals with some very powerful issues.
This film manages to make the audience feel uncomfortable yet enlightened at the same time, which is not an easy feat to accomplish at all.
The cast does an amazing job here and every one of them gives an extremely powerful performance.
Monique is the standout and her performance was able to garner her both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.
This film was nominated for 6 Oscars and in addition to Monique’s win, it managed to win Best Adapted Screenplay.
Who knows what the future brings, but after watching this again, I once again feel that this film while very poignant is too dark for my taste, and I’ll probably never see it again. (Famous Last Words) 🙂
Bottom Line – Not an easy film to watch because it deals with some very powerful issues. They don’t shy away from discussing these issues openly and frankly but in doing so makes the audience feel both uncomfortable and enlightened at the same time. The cast is quite powerful and Monique gives a very worthy performance here in a role that gave her both a Golden Globe and Oscar as Best Supporting Actress. It was also able to win Best Adapted Screenplay. This film is too dark and despite being poignant, I will probably never want to see it again. Highly Recommended!
