“Believing in everything at once is the same thing as believing in nothing. ” – Santosh Patel
Number of Times Seen – 2 (20 Jan 2013 and 11 Feb 2018)
Brief Synopsis – After the ship he and his family are traveling aboard sinks, a teenage boy finds himself in a lifeboat with a tiger and must find a way to survive both the dangers withing the lifeboat and without.
My Take on it – This is a really enjoyable film and is among the best survival films.
The narrative works really well and I liked the way they jump back and forth in time.
The story us told in s way that helps it be understood in multiple ways so that different people will be able to take away varying views on what it’s all really about.
It was a good idea to leave certain things a bit ambiguous because that too lends for multiple interpretations.
The story itself is presented in a magical way and the way that it is presented visually helps keep it that way.
The entire film is visually stunning and they masterful utilize special effects to make this look so beautifully.
The fact that this film chose to create all of the animals via special effects is amazing because they look so real.
This film was nominated for 11 Oscars that year and deservingly won 4 of them.
It won for Special effects, musical score, cinematography and Directing.
This film leaves the viewer with so much to think about an it can be seen as a mythical story, an existential story, a true story or even a story to be taken at face value.
I’ve personally never read the book this is based on, but I have heard that they were able to take an almost unadaptable story and masterfully translated it for the screen.
Bottom Line – Great story that can be understood on multiple levels. They leave things slightly ambiguous which allows the viewer to come to their own conclusion. The story itself comes across quite magical and is visually stunning. The fact that this film uses special effects entirely for the animals makes it even more awe inspiring because they truly seem very real in all of their actions. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Pi is on the lifeboat for 227 days. A good approximation for the number pi is 22/7. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
