The Kids Are All Right (2010)

“Hey, it’s already hard enough to open your heart in this world. Don’t make it any harder.” – Paul

Number of Times Seen – 2 (30 Jun 2013 and 12 Feb 2018)

Brief Synopsis – After turning 18, a young girl who grew up in a house with two mothers, seeks to make a connection to her biological father.

My Take on it – This is a film that I saw a few years back and wasn’t very impressed with it at the time.

The story was ok, but I was a bit baffled that this kind of film could actually be nominated for Best Picture both at the Oscars and the Golden Globes and even be able to win at the Globes for Best Picture – Comedy or Musical.

Upon rewatching this, my opinion of it changed drastically.

The story itself is really an interesting idea and it works quite well especially since it feels very original and unique.

The cast is superb with Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo doing great jobs here keeping things feeling realistic.

The two teenagers played by Josh Hutchinson and Mia Wasikowska also come across as feeling quite genuine and I liked the way they had them deal with lots of the issues presented here.

The issues discussed here are quite fascinating and they play out in an enjoyable way.

The problem I have with it tho is the fact that I’m still not really convinced that this is a film worthy of being considered among the top films of the year.

Don’t get me wrong, I did like it a lot and thought it was well made, but Best Picture Nominee???

Bottom Line – Very interesting idea that works really well.  The cast is superb and helps make this story feel very realistic.  They touch upon some really interesting issues that play out in a nice and enjoyable fashion. As good as this film is tho, I’m still not sold on the idea that it is the kind of film that is Best Picture caliber eventhough it was able to win the Golden Globe that year for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Julianne Moore received the script, and agreed to star in the film five years before filming began. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
