Number of Times Seen – 1 (20 Feb 2018)
Brief Synopsis –
My Take on it – This is a film that I have been contemplating seeing for quite some time since I heard nice things about it.
I have also always been a fan of John Cho’s work (even the non-Star Trek films) and had high hopes for this one.
Unfortunately, I was bored the entire time.
Nothing really happens here and the majority of the film is just two characters who don’t know each other talking about life (and mostly architecture).
The entire time, I felt like I was watching a poor imitation of any of Richard Linklater’s “Before” films.
In those films, it’s easy to feel chemistry between the characters but this film completely lacks any type of real connection between them.
The characters themselves aren’t interesting enough for us to care about their lives, aspirations or even what it holding them both back from doing what they ultimately wish to do.
This is quite unfortunate because as Linklater’s films prove it IS possible to create an interesting and enjoyable film with just two characters talking about their lives; the trick must be tho to find a way to make them interesting enough for the audience to care about them and their lives.
This film just doesn’t work on any level which is quite a shame.
If you want to see this done right, see any of the ‘Before’ films; it’s best to start with Before Sunrise (1995) tho.
Bottom Line – Really boring film. This is a poor version of any of the “Before” films by Linklater. The characters just aren’t interesting enough and their conversations don’t help make us care about them. I have always loved Cho in his films and was surprised that this film just didn’t work at all. This is all quite disappointing because the “Before” films have proven that it is possible to create an engaging and interesting film where the premise is basically just two characters trying to find a way to connect. This film just doesn’t manage to deliver at all.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Columbus, Indiana is known for its unique modern architecture. (From IMDB)
