Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (Cable in the 80’s and 90’s, 16 Oct 2005 and 21 Feb 2018)
Brief Synopsis – After graduating the Police Academy, the misfits from the previous money now must use what they learned on the streets.
My Take on it – This was the first sequel to the hit original film in what would eventually become a franchise.
This one doesn’t work as well as the previous film does, but they still are able to keep a firm balance between the crime and comedy elements of the story to keep things fun and interesting.
It’s great to revisit the characters that return from the original and we get to once again experience their antics as they try to fight street crime.
This films storyline is a bit of a rehash of the final act of the original film, but still works despite the many similarities between them.
This film still manages to have enough fun and enjoyable scenes to help make it work and stay entertaining for the entire time eventhough it is not groundbreaking in any manner at all.
What this film did prove tho was the fact that it’s possible to take a formulaic approach to this franchise and keep going with it.
How else could they have made 5 more films after this one?
Bottom Line – Doesn’t work as well as the original, but still manages to keep up the right amount of balance between humor and crime. The returning characters are fun to revisit and they give us some great new characters for them to interact with. The plot is a bit too similar to the previous movie’s final act, yet still works on its own level. Has enough funny parts to be enjoyable despite the storyline itself not be groundbreaking at all.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Despite the fact that no such character exists in the movie, a blonde policewoman appears on the official poster. This was an inside joke made by the producers, as they had also requested that the same “sexy girl” be included on an earlier version of the first film’s poster. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
