Police Academy 3: Back in Training (1986)

“[passing Sweetchuck’s moped on his motorcycle] Nice bike! Where do you put the batteries?” – Zed

Number of Times Seen – 1 (Theater in ’86, cable in the 80’s and 90’s, 18 Oct 2005 and 21 Feb 2018)

Brief Synopsis – The graduates of the Police Academy are called back to help keep the Academy open when the Governor wants to shut its doors.

My Take on it – Once again, they are able to bring a fun addition to this franchise despite the fact that the story and plot structure are quite formulaic.

Great seeing most of our favorite characters returning for this one and continuing their antics that we all know and love so much.

This was the first time that they chose to take characters that we met previously and make them part of the police force.

The choices of Sweetchuck and Zed in this film to take on those roles is a great one because it gives the story and characters a fresh take on it all.

This film ends with a really fun boat chase sequence that allows the characters to journey slightly out of their comfort zone yet still remains so much fun to watch because it works quite well here.

I always liked the way that certain scenarios in these films keep revisiting themselves but with other characters and despite not being original ideas still work quite well within the realm of the universe we all know as Police Academy.

Regardless, this is yet another addition to the franchise that can be enjoyed for the sake of it and help cheer someone up on a gloomy afternoon because it manages to give us some laughs.

Bottom Line – Another enjoyable film in the franchise that sticks to the formula that works. Fun seeing the characters back in action as they continue with their antics that we all know and love so much. The idea to make Sweetchuck and Zed cadets is a fun one because they add so much to the flavor and freshness of this film. The boat chase scenes at the end are quite fun to watch and works really well.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Drew Struzan said he considers the poster art for this film as his personal favorite of all the Police Academy posters he created. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)

  2. The Japanese character Tomoko Nogata (played by Brian Toshi) was originally written as a male Indian police cadet named Ramu, which explains why Nogata sleeps on a bed of nails that he picked up in New Delhi, and also likes to meditate with his hand over a candle flame.
