The Hunter (1980)

“I don’t know what you’ve been using, Mason, but it’s not good for you! ” – Papa Thorson

Number of Times Seen – 1 (26 Feb 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A modern day bounty hunter spends his days and nights tracking down criminals who have jumped bail.

My Take on it – This is another film in the repertoire of Steve McQueen that I have wanted to see for a while.

It is officially his final film and the premise always sounded interesting to me.

This is a really fun film and I liked the way it was done.

We are introduced to a really interesting character and McQueen plays him really well.

The first half of the film is great and as things progress we get a real sense of his character and his work ethic in catching criminals.

The problem with this film is the fact that it tries to tell too many storylines all at once and it loses its focus.

This all causes some of the storylines to feel too abrupt and takes away from the impact of each individual story while still keeping the overall feeling for the character and his purpose.

McQueen is great in the lead role and I think this is an excellent way for him to have ended his career (especially after his past two debacles he was in).

Also loved the added nuance of his character being a terrible driver especially given the fact that McQueen himself was a fan of racing cars and motorcycles.

This story would work even better as a TV series or a miniseries at least.

Bottom Line – Such a fun film that starts off really good and then loses its way because it doesn’t stay focused and tries too hard to deal with multiple storylines at once.  This causes some of those stories to feel a bit too abrupt.  McQueen is great in the lead and I really enjoyed the nuance about making his character a terrible driver. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Steve McQueen arrived at one of locations used for the film, he was checked into a really nice hotel with all the amenities available at the time. When he found out that the crew was staying in a cheaper motel nearby, he checked out of the hotel and stayed in the motel with the crew. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
