An Enemy of the People (1978)

“It says that if you’re good, there’s a supernatural force that’ll make sure you end up happy. And if you’re bad, you’ll be punished! Now since when does the world work that way?” – Petra

Number of Times Seen – 1 (26 Feb 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A local scientist in a Norwegian village discovers that the water in the nearby river is polluted and must stand against all of the townspeople who don’t wish to believe him.

My Take on it – This is a film that actually surprised me to see on the list of Steve McQueen’s filmography based solely on the premise.

The irony of it is that the premise is interesting just isn’t executed in a way that makes things flow well.

McQueen is way out of his depth here and despite his attempt to play a very serious character, it just doesn’t work despite the fact that he is almost unrecognizable due to a very bushy beard.

The supporting cast includes both Charles Durning and Richard Dysart and they are both fine here, but neither, like McQueen stand out at all.

The idea that this film tries to get across is a very good one and I liked the way they try to portray a man who decides to stand up not only for his own integrity but also because he wants to remain true to his own beliefs.

Despite all this, I can completely understand how this film flopped tho because it moves along way too slowly.

Bottom Line – Very interesting premise that doesn’t work at all. McQueen is out of his natural environment here and it shows. I can definitely understand how this film flopped because its pacing is super slow. The supporting cast is fine with Dysart and Durning being the most recognizable. Liked the idea of a man standing up for his integrity and his beliefs no matter the cost.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This was a personal project for McQueen, as he made it to prove to many people that he could act. But Warner Bros. could not figure out how to distribute it and decided not to release it domestically. It had a very brief theatrical release in New York a few years after it was made. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
