Number of Times Seen – 1 (28 Feb 2018)
Brief Synopsis – During the late 19th Century in Gotham, Batman must try and find out who has been mysteriously killing women.
My Take on it – This film is a great premise eventhough it takes characters from a place that we all are familiar with and transport the situation and characters back in time over a century.
The truth is, Batman is a great hero no matter what time or place he finds himself in.
This time, he is the perfect choice to try and catch Jack the Ripper while he causes havoc in Gotham.
Really enjoyed the way that they transplant almost all of the characters from the regular Batman stories so we get to see characters we are familiar with yet they are all slightly different due to the fact that they grew up in completely different times and places.
This film is an excellent example of a “What if?” premise and I for one would love to see lots more of these kind of films because they are so interesting yet since they are ‘out of the box’, they allow for even more thrilling stories to be played out for us.
Bottom Line – Very good premise that works despite the unusual transformation of the time period. Batman is a great hero no matter what age he is set in and this one works very well as he tries to uncover who Jack the Ripper truly is. Liked the way that the story is told using characters we are familiar with yet they are all slightly different due to the fact that they grew up in a different time and place. This is a great “what if?” idea and I’d love to see more of these kind of stories in the future. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, originally published in 1989, is considered to be DC Comics’ first Elseworlds story. “In ELSEWORLDS, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places–some that have existed, and others that can’t, couldn’t or shouldn’t exist.” – DC editorial copy. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
