“Now you got one chance: the gospel according to Luther. Whatever you need, you ain’t gonna get and whatever you get, it ain’t worth sh*t. ” – Luther
Number of Times Seen – 2 (Cable in the 90’s and 5 Mar 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A group of doctors at a Veteran’s hospital try to deal with their patients and the ever-changing bureaucracy that doesn’t allow them to do their jobs
My Take on it – This is a prime example of a film filled with an amazing cast, but since the script is terrible nothing much comes from their performances.
The message of the film should be poignant, but instead becomes laughable due to the way that this is presented to us.
This is quite unfortunate because there is a great story buried deep here, but the y try to be too cavalier about it instead of focusing on building the story better.
Normally if one sees a cast list filled with ray Liotta, Kiefer Sutherland, Kathy Baker, Forrest Whitaker, Lea Thompson, John C. McGinley, John Mahoney and Eli Wallach, one would expect great things, but even with so many great actors signed on here,. the script is so poorly written that even these talented men and women can’t help make this look any better.
Such a pity….
Bottom Line – Terrible film that despite having a great cast doesn’t manage to do anything that it sets out for. The idea is quite good, but it just all comes across as being laughable instead of poignant. Liotta, Sutherland, Keith, Whitaker, Thompson, McGinley, Mahoney, Baker and Wallach are all superb actors but they have so little to do here that it’s quite shameful.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Apparently Ray Liotta, as one of the “good guys” felt that he should dislike the actor playing a “bad guy”, John Mahoney, both on and off the set; when he saw Mahoney in wardrobe or makeup, he would either rush out of the room or immediately end all attempts at conversation. At the end of the shoot, Liotta smilingly approached Mahoney and told him it was a pleasure to work with him, to which Mahoney replied, “I wish I could say the same.” (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
