Number of Times Seen – 2 (Cable in the 90’s and 6 Mar 2018)
Brief Synopsis – An aspiring reporter works her way into a job and tries to move up the ladder.
My Take on it – This film just doesn’t manage to evoke enough emotion around the main charcters.
Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert Redford are both amazing actors but they just fizzle when their characters are together because the chemistry is so wrong.
It’s so hard to actually believe that they are a couple.
The choice to tell this story in flashback was a good one but it eventually reaches a point where the only reason you know hat time has shifted is due to Pfeiffer’s ever-changing hairstyle.
Parts of the film feel too rushed and instead of learning even more about the characters lives, scenes end abruptly and then move on to the next time period without finishing the previous one properly.
The characters aren’t developed well enough at all and it’s not easy to care as to whether they will end up together or not by the closing credits.
The best part about this film is the Oscar nominated song – Because you love me written by Dianne Warren and sung by Celine Dion.

Bottom Line – Interesting idea that just doesn’t work as well as it could have. Redford and Pfeiffer are both fine here as individuals but they don’t work well as a believeable couple. The idea of telling this in flashback works to an extent, but it gets to a point where you can only tell the time jumps based on Pfeiffer’s ever changing hairstyles. The main characters aren’t developed enough for us to care about what will happen to them and their relationship. One of the best things about this film though is the Oscar nominated song – Because you loved me.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Robert Redford considered casting Michelle Pfeiffer in Havana (1990). He wanted to work with her so signed on to Up Close and Personal as her co-star. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
