Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 Mar 2018)
Brief Synopsis – After her mobster husband is killed by the boss, a woman tries to cut her ties with the mob but they don’t let her.
My Take on it – This was a truly terrible film.
The biggest problem is that they decided to make this as an unfunny comedy.
The choice to have mobsters doing slapstick comedy doesn’t work at all.
They all seem like stereotypical gangsters but the portrayal of them as keystone cops is actually pretty annoying to watch.
Michelle Pfeiffer is given 3 different leading men to work with and none of them manage to have good chemistry with her.
This is slightly surprising since all 3 are great actors; Alec Baldwin, Matthew Modine and Dean Stockwell.
The premise itself is actually a good one and perhaps if they had made this a straight drama it might have worked so much better.
The story itself is pretty predictable and despite having many opportunities to do so, this film misses numerous possibilities for doing things right.
This film isn’t so long, but it drags along too much when trying to get to its point.
This, in turn, makes many scenes very unbearable to try and get through.
I just wanted this to end sooner than it does despite not being such a long film.
Bottom Line – Terrible film that just doesn’t work at all. Pfeiffer doesn’t have any chemistry with any of the 3 males she is attached to (Baldwin, Modine and Stockwell). The premise is actually an interesting one but the attempt to make this a comedy was a mistake. This might have worked much better as a straight drama. Most of the mobster are caricatures and they all play things as keystone cops which takes so much away from any impact this film could have. Too much of this film drags along and makes the viewer wish over and over that it would end sooner.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – According to Matthew Modine, he was depressed while making this film because of his rough experience making Full Metal Jacket (1987). (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (3/10)
