Grease 2 (1982)

“[singing] I want a whole lot more than the boy next door. I want hell on wheels. ” – Stephanie

Number of Times Seen – More than 10 times (Cable in the 80’s and 14 Mar 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A foreign exchange high school student falls in love with the female leader of a gang and must find a way to her heart.

My Take on it – This is a film that I saw lots and lots of times when it was on cable.

There was a time in my life where I believed that this was a better film than the original, but I now know much better.

The storyline of this film is quite mediocre (at best) and is quite weak the entire way through.

The soundtrack though is amazing and having listened to many of the songs dozens of times (if not more), I found myself once again singing and humming along with all the songs.

The cast is fine here without any of them really standing out, but it’s nice to see Michelle Pfeiffer here and she does a great job with what she is given.

The ironic thing about films like this one, Grease (1978) and of course West Side Story (1962) is the fact that it always makes me laugh thinking about having “tough” guys singing and dancing eventhough it works in these given circumstances.

Bottom Line – Mediocre storyline with an amazing soundtrack. The music is extremely memorable and I know the songs by heart and found myself singing along the whole time. Cast is ok here and it always makes me laugh thinking how movies like this one have tough guys sing and dance.  Not a film that works very well overall so just stick with the soundtrack.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Unlike Michelle Pfeiffer, Maxwell Caulfield’s career was severely damaged by the film. He has been quoted as saying: “Before Grease 2 came out, I was being hailed as the next Richard Gere or John Travolta. However, when Grease 2 flopped, nobody would touch me. It felt like a bucket of cold water had been thrown in my face. It took me 10 years to get over Grease 2.” (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)

  1. I only really know Max Caulfield from Empire Records. Not sure if you have seen it but it is a favourite of mine. I do remember as a pre-teen girl my friends and I learning all the words to the reproduction song because we thought it was scandalous!
