Hearts and Minds (1974)

“I recall that I was in the New York area at the time and I stopped by to see General MacArthur, who I had known for several years. When he greeted me, he made quite a prophetic statement. He said, Westmoreland, I see you have a new job. He says, I hope you appreciate that this new assignment if filled with opportunities; but, fraught with hazards. And, in deed, this was a prophetic statement. ” – General William Westmoreland

Number of Times Seen – 1 (18 Mar 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary that tries to explore the opposition to the Vietnam War.

My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve heard about for years, but knew very little about it.

It is still quite a controversial film even after nearly 44 years since it was made.

It managed to win Best Documentary at the Oscars that year and is still quite powerful.

I really liked the way that this film slowly reveals more and more information about the interviewees as the film moves along.

This allows us to be unbiased in our opinion of these people as we listen to what they have to say.

When watching this film now, much of what is presented here is widely known, but at the time this was made, much of what is shown was completely unknown to the public whioch made it even more groundbreaking at the time.

Bottom Line – This film won Best Documentary at the Oscars in 1974 and remains to this day a very controversial film.  Liked the way that it slowly reveals information about the interviewees and allows us to hear their opinions before we learn more about them. This allows us to make unbiased decisions on their thoughts. Much of what is shown here is now widely known, but at the time this was made, much of it was not known to the public.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – During his Oscar acceptance speech producer Bert Schneider read a letter from the head of the Viet Cong lauding his film. Bob Hope prompted Oscar host Frank Sinatra to disclaim any political statements that had been made during the show. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
