Number of Times Seen – 1 (19 Mar 2018)
Brief Synopsis – Based on the true story of a German couple who try to affect change among their fellow citizens one by one as Hitler’s rule became stronger.
My Take on it – This is another film that I knew absolutely nothing about before watching it.
The story they tell is definitely an important one yet is loses so much of its potential impact solely due to the way it is presented to us.
This is quite disappointing since its rare to get such a film that highlights heroic underground events of German civilians.
This film has three leads and none of their characters feel developed enough to help make us care about what they are doing nor what will eventually happen to them even if they are trying to change people’s opinions of the ruthless Nazi regime that governed at the time.
Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson are both fine here but neither manages to show much chemistry between their characters despite being married for so many years.
This is all quite unfortunate because the story itself could probably be made better and in a more engaging fashion that would help make us care more and more about the characters and the situations they find themselves thrust into due to circumstances that are way beyond their control.
It isn’t an easy task to make a film about honorable Germans during World War II and unfortunately, they don’t mange to pull it off in this film either.
Bottom Line – Quite disappointing film that tells an important story yet loses so much along the way. The three main characters don’t feel developed enough and that leads us to care a bit less as to what will happen with them as they try to defy the Nazi regime in their own way. Gleeson and Thompson are both fine here despite the lack of real chemistry between them.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Based on the novel Every man dies alone by Hans Fallada. The novel itself is allegedly based on actual gestapo files that Fallada was given access to. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
