Along Came A Spider (2001)

“To be brutally honest, I think you have a morbid desire to burn in hell” – Alex Cross

Number of Times Seen – 2 (21 Oct 2001 and 21 Mar 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Alex Cross must try and find the daughter of a Senator who has been kidnapped by a man posing to be a teacher in her exclusive school.

My Take on it – This was a film that I saw not long after it came out and after 16+ years, I didn’t remember much about it.

The story itself isn’t as thrilling as one would hope that it could be especially after the previous Alex Cross Adaptation was so enjoyable.

This film has a few twists and turns that work but overall it just doesn’t feel any different than most of the generic crime thrillers that Hollywood churns out every year.

Morgan Freeman, who was great in his initial turn as Cross feels too subdued here and his character just doesn’t feel as powerful and intelligent as he did in the previous one which is quite a shame.

Michael Wincott isn’t the best villain and seems mismatched against even a subdued Freeman.

Great seeing a young Anton Yelchin in this film especially since this was one of his very first roles.

Overall, this film comes across as having a great premise but gets lost along the way and just turns itself into a generic thriller that falls flat towards the end.

There’s really no wonder as to why they halted this series after just two outings with Freeman at the helm.

Quite unfortunate because there are some great Cross stories they could have adapted.

Bottom Line – Mediocre film that isn’t as thrilling as one would hope it could be as a followup story. There are some nice twists and turns here, but nothing really makes this film stand out from the plethora of generic thrillers made ever year. Freeman feels somewhat subdued in this story and isn’t as powerful a character as he played in the original Alex Cross film adaptation.  The storyline isn’t as engaging as the previous one.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This sequel to Kiss the Girls (1997) was greenlit when the first film was still in the theaters. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
