Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Mar 2018)
Brief Synopsis – An elderly couple decides to take a trip in their Mobile home to try and relive their younger days.
My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard about before seeing and was a bit reluctant to do so but my wife insisted we go see it since she had seen a few commercials advertising it.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this film.
They are able to take both serious and comedic moments and weave them together in order to give us a really enjoyable story that feels balanced between heavy and light themes.
Donald Sutherland and Helen Mirren are both superb here and they make us believe their characters and also the love that has grown between them over the course of nearly half a century.
This film is clearly a drama, yet they add in lots of twists, turns and surprises along the way in order to keep things intriguing without revealing what will happen.
I loved the way that the trip that they take feels both refreshing and nostalgic at the same time because not only do we get to experience their current journey, but they discuss and describe previous trips from years gone by so we can get the full idea of how important these family trips have been for them over the years.
This is really an underrated film that I think might surprise many people as to how much they can get from it.
Bottom Line – Very surprised by how enjoyable this film was. They are able to weave together serious subject matter with light comedy in order to keep things balanced. Sutherland and Mirren are both superb here and they truly make us believe that they are a married couple that have weathered it all together over nearly a half century. Despite being a drama, they give us some great twists and turns along the way in order to keep us guessing as to what is going to happen. The trip for them gives the viewer a feeling of nostalgia because they not only discuss previous trips from years gone by but also describe them so that we get the full idea. Very underrated film. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Michael Zadoorian. (From IMDB)
